Sewer outfalls and river crossings are a feature of civil engineering works. Our featured Contract shows the crossing of the River Mulkear near Limerick 80m wide. A 1000mm high performance polyethylene pipe was placed inside a steel sleeve, 1200mm diameter, and placed into a pre-dug channel in the river bed. The buoyancy of the design was taken into account in the lifting process. The annulus between the pipes was then grouted providing the necessary protection. Environmental considerations are paramount in executing river crossings, potential contamination from excavated material and introducing concrete to the river channel is avoided in this case.
