Project Description:

This Contract involved the installation and commissioning of 3,500m of twin storm and sewer mains through the town of Carrigtohill.

The Scope of these Works was increased from the original Tender to cater for large infrastructural development in connection with the large Amgen Plant.

Particular Challenges:

  • 4No. 1000mm tunnels each 100m long utilising pipejacking methods with the jacking/reception shafts located in the main junction of the town. Extensive co-ordination with local resident groups and the County Council was required to ensure disruption to the businesses and residents of the town was kept to a minimum. The ground conditions varied throughout the length of the tunnel from clay to hard limestone rock. Gas blasting was required to progress the tunnels through the rock. Extensive vibration monitoring was put in place during this work and no effect on property was recorded.
  • A 1000mm tunnel, approximately 60m in length, was constructed across the N25 dual Carriageway between Carrigtohill and Cork. This was installed using Pipe-Ramming techniques. The ground conditions were sand and silt.
  • Construction of 900mm diameter ductile iron pipe, south of the N25, 8m deep, in fine silts (SPT N value=0) which was subject to tidal variation of Cork Harbour. Wellpoint dewatering, in addition to sheetpiles and frames, were necessary temporary works requirements. Environmental requirements in this highly sensitive harbour location required settlement lagoons, etc., to filter out silts, etc. Permanent steel bearing piles, up to 60m deep supporting a ‘U’ shaped precast concrete pipe cradle, were necessary permanent works requirements. Two piperams (tunnels) were used to deal with the two major services crossings, to minimise health and safety risks.
  • Temporary and permanent works designs were developed and prepared by Ward and Burke in-house. All manholes were precast in advance, in our Precast Yard.
  • A 10m deep pumping station [6m x 6m] was constructed adjacent to the existing treatment works in silt and running sand. This involved substantial temporary works to construct the cofferdam and plug the base to allow the construction of the pumping station structure.
  • Traffic Management on site was under the responsibility of Ward & Burke Construction Ltd.
  • Liaison with numerous stakeholders along the route of the pipeline including Cork County Council Roads and Sanitary Services divisions, ESB, Telecom, landowners, businesses and residents. Large industrial businesses such as Amgen.
