Special Construction Techniques:

  • Most of this pipeline was constructed cross-country, in fields. At an early stage archaeology was encountered. As it proved too considerable to resolve to avoid this and other construction problems, Ward and Burke negotiated additional wayleave widths with the farmers over the complete length of the Contract. This allowed access to the Works to continue despite the ongoing Archaeological works.
  • Manholes were all precast ahead of the Works by carrying out intense preplanning works.  This minimised any potential problems whilst constructing manholes at depths of some 6m. These manholes were precast at Ward and Burkes precast yard.
  • The river crossings were completed using precast concrete beams as a surround to the twin wall pipes, to avoid any chance of environmental problem in placing concrete in the river. These beams were generally some 12m long and were placed using two 40t excavators in an open trench in the river. This facilitated a constant flow. Floating pollution bunds were provided to the approval of the fisheries board.
  • The sewer network was constructed on narrow roads which required road closures with diversions. The details of these diversions were drafted and approved by the Council in order to comply with H&S requirements.
