Project Description:
The site is located in a busy urban environment adjacent to the Towns’ main car park and bounded by a 6m high masonry wall (part of the old Barracks) on one side and on the other side by a housing estate.
The Project involved the following activities:
- Site clearance including limited demolition of existing walls and fences adjacent to a watercourse.
- Construction of the following concrete structure: Access Road Bridge. The route of the Access Road is directly over and along the Castlebar River. The bridge acts as a large ‘culvert’. This is a salmonoid river and the works therefore required all the necessary approvals and work methods associated with Works of this nature.
A simply supported, transverse spanning, prestressed concrete composite deck comprising of inverted TY beams with a solid concrete infill. The deck is supported on piled ground beams located on the riverbanks and running parallel to the river for a distance of approximately 150m. The piles are H-section driven piles in conjunction with 200mm diameter micro piles. Pile driving was undertaken from a piling platform in the river. The close proximity of the masonry wall posed particular challenges in relation to piling and vibration monitoring. The span of the structure varies from 11m to 15.5m.
The restricted nature of the site necessitated a phased approach to bridge construction - one section of deck completed allowing access to construct the next section.
- Associated Roadworks: over and adjacent to the Access Road Bridge and comprising of 175m of two lane access road with associated drainage, ducting, street lighting, hard and soft landscaping, boundary walls, accommodation and miscellaneous works associated with road and bridge construction.
- Associated Junction Work: to connect the proposed access road to the existing road network and involved the construction of a mini-roundabout junction at Lower Charles Street and resurfacing works to existing roads in the vicinity of the proposed mini-roundabout junction. This Work also required reshaping and realignment of approach roads on either side of the roundabout.
- Traffic management works provided for access and materials delivery to the site, e.g. bridge beams. Upon completion of the bridgeworks, roundabouts were constructed at either end in a busy urban environment. Numerous traffic management phases were required to complete the works.
